Reminder for Saturday and New Years eve
Hey guys
While I know that barely one in fifty of you actually get my emails anymore, (anyone who understands mail software PLEASE HELP) I thought I would send out a reminder about Saturday night at the New Ed Pub Dec 15th 2007 and also let you know that we are playing New Years Eve at The Postmaster in Aylmont.
No cover for the New Ed but please do have a beer or a drink and maybe something to eat as it does encourage them to have us back. Start time is around 9:00 PM to midnight
Also, we will be playing New Years Eve at the Postmaster in Aylmont, a wonderful intimate little restaurant in a very charming town about 25 minutes from Ottawa.
I dont know what the cover charge is there, but there is one and it should be fun as it always is when we play there.
Hoping to see many of you in the next few weeks

2 shows one sort of unusual
Hi everyone and again, thank you for being on my email list.
We are doing 2 shows so far in August. The second one, is Aug. 11th at the New Edinburgh Pub #1 Beechwood on the patio if the weather permits and as you all know by now I'm sure, is a fun venue for all. This would be Shane Isreal Jack and myself.
The first show is a trio, James (me) Israel on bass and guitar (for those who do not know, Israel is a savage jazz guitarist) and Jack at a farm where the owner has a a kind of small festival every year. There are also a few bands from Toronto coming up to play it and it is about 90 minutes drive from Ottawa and would likely require anyone coming to camp at least for one night the 6th of August.
Apparently there is lots of swimming and other activities. In any case, if anyone is interested in coming up to this event please email me at james@james-cohen.com subject line August long weekend and Ill forward you back the maps and relevant information about it.
Lastly, I have room in my teaching schedule at the Ottawa Folklore Center for 5 students and room at home for 3. so please also email me if anyone is interested in taking guitar lessons from me at either location.
Once again thank you for being on my list, and I hope to see you at the New Ed Aug. 11th 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM

Upcoming shows
Hey everybody and again thank you for being on my list.
We have 2 shows to let you know about.
We are very pleased to be back at the Ottawa Blues fest this year, July 7th at the River Stage 1:15 PM at Lebretton Flats. The band, myself Shane Simpson Izzy Martinez, (the magic man on bass guitar) and Jack McGregor will be doing a set for you there as well as a special guest who you all know but I cant name just yet.
Sunday the 8th July we will be playing a celebratory gig at our favorite Haunt The New Ed Pub either upstairs on the patio if the weather is good or downstairs inside if raining or cold 7:00 to 10:00 PM
Also, I'm working on putting together a course at the Ottawa Folklore Center for beginer flamenco dance and also accompaniment of dance on guitar. I should have all the details very soon and will send out another email with them as soon as I know exactly how its going to work. It should be a fun casual 4 week class for any age people who wish to learn the very fundamentals of flamenco dance. no dance experience is necessary at all.
Anyway I hope to see lots of you this weekend. Thanks again to Bluesfest for inviting us to play and the Ottawa Folklore Center for hosting this class.

sorry for the delay!
Dear list members.
Im sorry its been so long since I have been able to write you as my web sites have been either down or disabled for some time. I’m pleased to report that they are up and working finally after much adjustment and work on the part of Steve Comeau.
Its with deep regret that I inform you all of the passing away of a friend of mine and one of Canada’s giants in the music business, Richard Bell.
Richard played on, and produced my 3rd CD, High Side of Low Down and did an excellent job. He was also a good friend to me in many ways. While many of you will not have heard of Richard Bell, I’m certain ALL of you will have heard him as he played with Janis Joplin’s full tilt boogie band as well as anyone who was anyone in the music business from the 60s on. Pretty much anyone over 30 has at least one CD with Richard on it.
He also has been offered a solo career many times but chose instead to avoid the limelight and work supporting other artists.
His mother and at least one sister I know of survive him.
If you have a moment sometime today, google for Richard Bell and see what comes up. Much of what he has done won’t show. Like working with Jimmy Hendrix etc. But enough will to make interesting reading I’m sure.
I will be sending out an email soon about many upcoming shows!
Thanks for your patience and my email is working again james@vko.com

New Ed Pub Sunday
Hi guys
There has been some problems with the data base that im just trudging through now so many people on the list have not been able to confirm or recieve emails.
Technology is excellent when it doesnt drive you mad.
My good friend T.J. Wheeler, an excellent blues/jazz guitarist is driving up from the US to join me for a couple of shows with a variety of my friends. We are playing tommorow night, Saturday April 1 in Aylmont in the evening (details on my site at www.james-cohen.com ) and an informal jam with TJ, myself, Jack MacGregor, and others from 2:30 to 5:30 in the afternoon Sunday APril 2
There is no covcer charge for sunday and the new ed has one of the best Brunches in the city from 10:30 to 2:00 so if you want to come out and grab Brunch at the New Ed (corner of Beechwood and the Vanier Parkway) and stick around for the band we would love to see you all there.
Its been quite a long time since I have played in Ottawa and I am off to the US for a week to play with TJ in New England, then back here to finish my new CD Hi Phi which is late, but I think its going to be worth the wait.
I hope to see you this weekend its been way to long

The Caravan at the New Ed
Hey everybody
The band and I are at the New Ed Pub this Wednesday, Nov 16th from about 9:00 to around midnight.
We have Jose Duque on percusion up from Venezuela as well as Shane Simpson on guitar with a special guest, Rick Olivere from new Orleans. He is an astonishing Gypsy Jazz guitarist in the Django Rheinheart tradition.
There is no cover charge so please come and bring any friends who may be interested. As members of my band either live far away or are on tour with other projects, its hard to get everyone together so Im pleased to have the opportunity to play for you all here in Ottawa.
Thanks also to those of you that made it to The Black Sheep last night. It was a lot of fun for us I hope it was for you.

New Ed and various things
Hey everyone.
A few things of note. I have a brand new web page with lots of new pics from recent events. Also, those of you that have digital pics from our shows that would like to have them up, please email them to me at james@vko.com and I would be happy to put them up on the site.
The band is pleased to announce that we have a new percussionist, Jose Duque from Venezuela who now resides in New Hampshire and is a spectacular percussionist. he has the distinction of having accompanied Carmen Amaya's granddaughter in Boston for a time and is an excellent flamenco and all around percussionist.
Devin Johnstone is launching a career as a guitarist in Montreal and we wish him well. He is a superb musician.
The band and I have been working when possible on our new CD, Hi Phi which has many guest performances from the Caravan present and past and some excellent help from Mike Macdonald as bassist and producer on many tracks. We hope to release sometime this fall.
We have not played locally in Ottawa for some time now but we have confirmed a date at The New Edinburgh Pub Sunday afternoon from 4:00 to 7:00
I hope to see a lot of you there.

Night Of Artists May 7
Hey everybody
The Caravan and I as well as Sue foley and a large number of Canadian artists of various media are doing a night of artists show here in Ottawa at the Congress center Saturday night May 7th.
Night of artists is the same organisation that brought my band out to Alberta for a 10 day tour and now the founder is bringing the concept to Ottawa and accross Canada.
Im going to paste his press release below, but a thing or two that he does not say and I think should be said, is that every show he does has not one dime of Govt. money involved. He gets no grants or special favours from Govts at any level and every show he does raises money for local charities as well.
Personaly, I think this is a step to bringing the arts in Canada to what it should be, a net contributor to the economy instead of a loss.
The first show in Ontario is at the congress center May 7th and the second, in Perh Ontario the Saturday after.
Below is the official release about the show.
I hope to see lots of you there, its a fun evening and good for families as well. Some food is free with admision as well.
