James Cohen's Guitars

Negra
The first guitar I asked Murray to build for me was a Negra. Since nearly all the guitarists I admire, Tomatito, Rafael Riqueni, and many others seemed to use dark wood guitars to get their sound, I figured that was the way to go. Murray used Indian rosewood although it looks like Brazilian. This guitar has great bass and sustain. It’s built to flamenco specs but it has a much more classical sound than a typical cypress one La Guitarra Negra

Sycamore
The second was a sycamore. Actually, I asked for a matching pair of sycamore guitars, one for me and one for special friend. Both guitars have purple heart (a wood I fell in love with on numerous trips to Venezuela) trim and bridges. This guitar is awesome. Bright, fast and loud as well as light.

Hephestus
Lastly, I wanted a guitar with purple heart back and sides. To the best of my knowledge, this has not been done before as a flamenco. The wood threw sparks when it was being sawn and all the tools needed resharpening numerous times. Murray is not planning to build any more of these for a while he tells me. This is the most satisfying guitar I have ever played. It is loud and clear as a bell. Has awesome sustain and profound yet bright bass tones. To look at it, is amazing. Rich, bright purple wood that shimmers when polished like tiger's eye; I call this guitar... Hephestus.
